New Year’s Resolutions?

Blog - New Year's Resolutions

I added the question mark after New Year’s Resolutions intentionally, because I am not convinced they work. Certainly not for me. I have found through past experience that I try to change too many areas of my life at once. Do you know what I mean?

However, the reality of changing every area of my life at once means I fail in everything I attempt!

If you have read one of my previous blogs, you will know that I love notebooks and have lists for everything. But this is not the same as keeping a diary, or documenting progress. I have never felt the compelling urge to write down everything that has happened in my life on a certain day. Rather my focus is always on the next day, or the day after that. Perhaps this personality trait hinders my progress when it comes to New Year’s Resolutions?

New approach

So, following years of disappointment and unsuccessful attempts at keeping resolutions going throughout the year, I have decided that a new approach is required:

For example, one of my goals was to reorganise the two drawers under the sink in the bathroom. An easily achievable task within a short time frame. However, the result from this has been far-reaching. Not only do I now know exactly what is in each drawer, but I have reorganised the contents for the benefit of my health – a win-win situation! Moreover, this success has prompted me to do the same thing in the kitchen – we all have that one drawer full of batteries, chargers, light bulbs, keys etc., don’t we?

I suppose I have come to the conclusion that steady progress wins the prize. Committing to just 10-15 minutes every day is much easier than changing every area of your life overnight! And as long as the momentum is moving forwards, then gradual change will happen. By the end of 2020, that 15 minutes every day will total 91 hours! Moreover, I am sure that as I start to see progress, that 15 minutes will become 30, then 60 and maybe even 90 minutes a day.

Embrace the YES!

I have also vowed to become more positive, because negative energy is extremely debilitating. Hence my saying for 2020, ’embrace the YES!’ Too often I will say I can’t do something when I haven’t even tried, so I am hoping that embracing the YES will help to combat those negative feelings about myself.

How do you feel about New Year’s Resolutions? Do you feel under pressure to change your life, go for it in a big way, then realise that you have bitten off more than you can chew? If this sounds like you (and me!), here is an article with some helpful advice.
